3 signs of a drunk driver

On Behalf of | Jul 6, 2024 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Drunk driving is illegal in every state. In New Jersey, an individual who has a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08% or higher violates the law if they drive. The reason why drunk driving is illegal is because it endangers both the driver’s life and passengers and pedestrians.

While traffic law protects people from facing serious injuries, laws do not always deter people from drunk driving. There are a few signs that a driver is drunk if you are on the road. By knowing these signs, you can drive defensively. Here is what you should know:

1. Swerving between lanes

Drunk drivers may struggle to control their vehicles. As a result, they may not stay within their lane. A driver who swerves between lanes could be drunk.

2. Sudden braking

You may notice that a car is braking frequently and suddenly. This could happen as this vehicle gets closer to a red light or stop sign or for no apparent reason. This pattern could indicate a driver is drunk.

3. Running red lights and stop signs

Alcohol can cause drivers to suffer judgment impairment. As a result, a drunk driver may speed through red lights and stop signs without realizing they are violating the law.

What are your options if a drunk driver hits you?

It is not always possible to know if a driver is drunk. However, you may still have compensation options if you are struck by another vehicle. Legal guidance can help establish the liable party in a car accident. The liable party could be held responsible for the accident, and they may have to pay for your medical bills, vehicle repair costs, funeral bills, lost wages and other financial losses.
